A forex EA, or Expert Advisor, is a program that runs trading or analysis rules inside MetaTrader. Some EAs automate entries and exits; others manage positions, send alerts or draw information on a chart. A forex robot is an informal label, not a quality or performance rating.
Automated forex trading and algorithmic trading describe broader approaches to executing rule-based decisions. An MT5 EA is one implementation. Code can follow its rules consistently, but it cannot remove market risk, broker limitations, software faults or losses.
What an Expert Advisor can and cannot do
- An EA can monitor market data and submit or manage orders according to its programmed conditions and inputs.
- An EA cannot guarantee that an order fills at a requested price, that historical patterns repeat or that a strategy suits your account.
- A chart indicator may assist analysis without executing trades; confirm whether the product is an EA, indicator or trade manager.
- MT4 and MT5 EAs are built for different terminals; check the exact version, symbol, timeframe and broker requirements.
How to evaluate automated forex trading
Before comparing returns, write down the entry, exit, sizing and maximum-exposure rules. Test the same version and inputs on suitable historical data, then reserve separate data for forward checks. Inspect equity drawdown, open exposure, losing sequences, commissions, spread assumptions and execution logs rather than balance growth alone.
A backtest is a model of past data, not a live promise. Demo testing can reveal installation and execution problems but cannot guarantee future results. Use platform documentation to understand tester settings and reproduce the report.
Forex robots, copy trading and manual trading are different
With an EA, software runs rules on your own terminal and account. Copy trading attempts to mirror another provider's orders through a separate platform or copier. Manual trading leaves decisions and order placement to the trader. They differ in control, costs, execution and operational responsibilities; none is automatically safer.

Gold and XAUUSD Expert Advisors
A gold trading EA must be evaluated against the broker's XAUUSD contract specifications, spread, trading hours and volatility. See the existing XAUUSD EA evaluation guide for a product-selection checklist; it does not promise a trading outcome.
