Why Gold Spreads Widen During Major News Events

Understand Bid–Ask spread widening, chart-side differences, slippage and event timing on XAUUSD, with an example of cash cost and stop activation.

The spread is Ask minus Bid: the distance between the quoted buy and sell prices. It is separate from how far the market subsequently moves. Around a major release, Gold can move quickly while its executable spread also changes, so a chart-only replay can understate the cost and complexity of placing or closing an order.

Providers can revise quotes and available liquidity when uncertainty rises. Broker documentation describes spread increases around news, market openings and closings. That explains a possible mechanism, not the cause of every individual quote or proof that any broker acted improperly. Investigate the actual recorded Bid and Ask, order timestamps and contract terms.

Why a news release changes quoting conditions

A release introduces new information while participants reassess prices. Available buying and selling interest can change before an order reaches it. Some quotes may be withdrawn or replaced; the price at which your requested size is available can differ from the price seen a moment earlier. More activity does not necessarily mean a stable narrow spread at every instant.

Scheduled releases such as inflation data or a policy announcement allow preparation, but their exact market response is unknown. Unexpected headlines do not provide advance warning. A lower-impact calendar label is also not a guarantee of quiet prices. Treat the calendar as timing information and verify the current spread directly rather than assuming a fixed cost from the event's label.

Calculate what the widening costs

Assume a fictional USD account, a linear 100-ounce-per-lot Gold contract and 0.10 lots. Exposure is 10 ounces. If the spread is $0.30, its immediate round-trip price-distance amount is $3; at a $1.50 spread it is $15. The calculation is spread × contract size × lots. Separate commission and financing charges are additional where applicable.

For a new long opened at Ask, closing immediately at an unchanged Bid realizes that spread distance. If you calculate profit from the actual opening and closing fills later, the spread's effect is already in their difference. Do not subtract it again. The example illustrates a cost increase; it is not a current broker quote or a universal spread ceiling.

The chart can show only one side

MT5 symbol properties identify whether chart bars are constructed from Bid or Last prices. A Bid chart alone does not show every Ask change. For many OTC symbols, a short position's stop is checked on Ask while a long position's stop is checked on Bid; confirm the exact broker's rules, especially for exchange instruments.

Imagine a fictional short with a stop at 3,005. The displayed Bid is 3,004.40 while Ask widens to 3,005.20. Under an Ask-trigger rule, the stop can activate even though the Bid chart never reaches 3,005. This does not establish a fill price. Ask history, the order log and the broker's trigger and execution policy are needed to investigate what happened.

Spread and slippage are separate

Slippage is the difference between a requested or trigger price and the actual execution price. Spread widening changes the two quoted sides; slippage concerns the fill. Both can affect the same order, but they are not interchangeable labels. A stop becoming active at a particular quote does not ensure that the full order can execute there.

Limit orders constrain price under their defined terms but can remain unfilled. Stop-limit orders can also leave exposure open when their limit cannot execute. Moving to another order type therefore changes the failure mode; it does not remove execution risk. Check supported order types and fill policies rather than treating a platform button as a guarantee.

Prepare and review with actual evidence

  • Check release times in the calendar's stated time zone and convert them to broker-server time explicitly.
  • Record the ordinary spread at the times the strategy operates, plus observations around relevant releases.
  • Verify how an EA's news or spread filter works, including whether it blocks only new entries or also affects position management.
  • Keep actual requested prices, triggers, fills, Bid–Ask observations and commission with the trade record.
  • Test gaps, rejected orders and reconnects on a suitable isolated setup; a historical test cannot reproduce every live fill.

Frequently asked questions

Will a news filter guarantee protection? No. Unscheduled events and positions already open remain relevant. Does a spread spike always mean the stop slipped? No; trigger side and execution price must be checked separately. Should a stop be widened after a release simply to avoid an exit? That changes the planned risk; evaluate the rule and position size in advance instead of assuming the original risk amount still applies.
