Gold and forex can appear next to each other in the same MT5 Market Watch window, but they do not share one universal lot definition. Gold is a metal quoted against a currency; EURUSD is an exchange rate between two currencies. A broker can provide leveraged contracts for both while using different calculation modes, margin rules and trading sessions.
This comparison concerns typical linear broker contracts, with explicit fictional assumptions below. Physical Gold, Gold ETFs, exchange-traded futures and retail currency contracts are distinct products. Check the legal product and broker specification before transferring an example. The asset with the larger chart move is not automatically the one with the larger account risk.
Translate lots into the underlying quantity
Suppose one Gold lot represents 100 troy ounces and one EURUSD lot represents 100,000 euros. Then 0.10 lots represents 10 ounces in Gold but 10,000 euros in EURUSD. Those equal order volumes do not establish equal notional value or equal loss at a stop. The numbers are assumptions, not specifications for every broker.
Open each symbol's Specification and record contract size, tick size, tick value, profit currency, minimum volume and volume step. Quote precision is another field: three decimal places on Gold do not redefine the economic quantity in one lot. If the account currency differs from the profit currency, a conversion is also needed to reconcile the cash result.
A hypothetical matched-risk comparison
For a USD account and our assumed contracts, a 0.10-lot Gold trade with a $10 adverse price distance has $100 planned gross loss: 0.10 × 100 × 10. A 0.10-lot EURUSD trade with a 0.0100 adverse exchange-rate distance also has $100 planned gross loss: 0.10 × 100,000 × 0.0100. The equality comes from the chosen distances, not the identical lot size.
If the EURUSD stop is only 0.0020 away, the same volume instead has $20 gross distance risk. Conversely, increasing Gold's stop to $20 doubles its gross planned risk to $200. Commission, financing and execution deviations can change realized results. A stop order is an exit instruction, not a guaranteed maximum loss.
Compare costs relative to the strategy
| Feature | Gold question | Forex question |
|---|---|---|
| Spread | What dollar price distance does it consume? | What exchange-rate distance does it consume? |
| Volatility | What are recent ranges as percentages of price? | What are recent ranges for this currency pair? |
| Financing | How is the metal contract's overnight charge applied? | How is the pair's long or short charge applied? |
| Sessions | Are there daily breaks or special holiday hours? | When does this broker's pair stop quoting? |
| Events | Which dollar, rate and metal drivers are relevant? | Which releases affect both currencies? |
Event exposure is different, and sometimes shared
Gold has investment and physical-demand channels. A currency pair reflects the relative price of two currencies, with policy and economic developments on both sides. US releases can affect both XAUUSD and dollar pairs, so holding several such positions is not automatically diversification. Inspect the direction and cash exposure of the whole account.
Avoid general claims that Gold always moves faster or a major pair is always cheaper. Compare actual percentage ranges, executable spreads and round-trip costs at the times your strategy operates. A $0.50 Gold spread and a two-pip forex spread cannot be ranked by the displayed number alone; convert them into cash for the chosen position and into a share of the target distance.
A transferable setup needs a fresh test
- Keep the original entry and exit logic documented, then adapt units only with the contract specification in front of you.
- Check volume rounding and minimum trade size after recalculating cash risk; an invalid volume is not solved by increasing risk silently.
- Test session breaks, varying spreads, commission and financing on the new symbol.
- Record equity drawdown, holding time and exposure rather than comparing only closed profit.
- Treat results on a separate period and demo account as additional evidence, not proof of future profitability.
Frequently asked questions
Is 0.01 lot equally safe on Gold and forex? No. Contract size, stop distance and costs determine cash risk. Is Gold a forex pair because the symbol ends in USD? No; the notation expresses the quote currency, not the product's underlying asset. Can a forex EA trade Gold unchanged? Only its documented support and tested calculation rules can answer that; sharing MT5 does not establish compatibility.
