Support and resistance describe areas where price previously reacted or where a trader wants to examine a future response. They are observations and hypotheses, not invisible barriers. XAUUSD can pass through a carefully drawn level, and several traders can mark different zones on the same chart because their timeframes and rules differ.
A useful chart contains a small number of dated, explainable areas. State whether a zone comes from completed swing highs, repeated closes, a previous session range or another rule. Drawing a line wherever the finished chart later reversed produces attractive hindsight examples but does not establish a method that was available at the time.
Choose the chart before choosing the level
Begin with one broker symbol and a defined timeframe. A daily Gold zone and a five-minute pullback solve different questions. Daily boundaries can vary with the provider's session convention, so a prior-day high is not always identical across feeds. Record the provider and time zone when using session-based levels.
Inspect completed candles and separate the higher-timeframe area from the shorter-timeframe behavior inside it. More lines do not necessarily provide more information. If several nearby levels overlap, represent the overlap as a clearly bounded area rather than implying that every decimal is a separate precise turning point.
Turn a repeated reaction into an explicit zone
Consider fictional completed H1 swing lows at 2,994.0, 2,995.5 and 2,996.0. For a drawing exercise, mark 2,994.0โ2,996.0 as a candidate support zone. This records the range of observations; it is not a recommendation or a claim that the next visit will bounce. Explain whether your bounds use wicks, bodies or both before applying the same rule elsewhere.
A width chosen after seeing the next reversal is not a fair test. Use a predeclared rule for combining nearby observations or setting a volatility allowance, then keep failed zones in the sample. Repeated touches can reflect interest, but they do not create a guaranteed stronger barrier: price can eventually break after any number of visits.
Define touch, rejection and break separately
| Observation | One possible rule | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|
| Touch | A completed candle's range enters the marked area | Whether the following candle reacts |
| Rejection | Price enters the area and closes back outside it | Whether that reaction continues |
| Break | A completed close passes beyond the far boundary | Whether price returns immediately |
| Retest | A later range revisits a previously crossed area | Whether its earlier role persists |
Work out distance risk before assuming a trade
Suppose a fictional study uses long entry 3,000, stop 2,991 and target 3,018. The planned gross price-distance ratio is 18 รท 9 = 2:1. With an assumed linear 100-ounce Gold contract and 0.05 lots in a USD account, the stop-distance amount is 9 ร 100 ร 0.05 = $45 before charges or execution differences. None of these numbers is a live level.
If the actual entry is instead 3,006 with the same stop and target, the ratio becomes 12 รท 15 = 0.8:1. A zone remaining on the chart does not preserve the original economics after price moves. Account for actual executable prices, commission and possible slippage; a broker stop can fill beyond the requested price during a gap.
Keep the failed examples
For each marked zone, save a screenshot before the next visit and record whether it held, broke or was not revisited. Include the event calendar and the spread when evaluating execution. A level that appears excellent on a Bid chart can interact differently with a short position's Ask-side exit.
Compare alternative rules on separate samples rather than changing the boundary whenever a loss occurs. Journal the number of observations, the invalidation rule and the maximum adverse excursion. A profitable selected screenshot cannot establish the probability of a successful reaction or the future return of a level-based strategy.
Checklist and common questions
Are round numbers guaranteed support? No; they are reference points to test. Must old resistance become support? No; role reversal is a possible behavior, not a requirement. Is a wick through the area a confirmed breakout? Only if the method defines it that way; a wick-based rule and a close-based rule should be assessed separately.
- Label the symbol, feed, timeframe and construction rule beside each zone.
- Use information that existed when the zone was drawn, including the confirmation delay for swing points.
- Predefine what invalidates the area and how long it remains relevant.
- Check news, spread, cash exposure and actual fill assumptions before evaluating a setup.
