Forex Swap Fees Explained: Calculate Overnight Costs Before Holding

Read long and short swap specifications, distinguish cash and point-based rates, calculate a hypothetical multi-day holding cost, and account for changing rollover rules.

A trade can have a favorable price move and still produce a disappointing net result after holding costs. Overnight financing, commonly shown as swap in forex and CFD platforms, becomes particularly relevant when a position remains open across several rollover dates or an EA carries a losing basket for weeks.

The rate is not the same as the spread or an entry commission. Nor can it be inferred reliably from two countries' policy rates alone: the broker's contract, direction, financing method and charges matter. The examples below use explicitly invented rates to illustrate accounting, not current broker quotations or a claim that any instrument has a positive carry.

Read the unit before multiplying

In MT5, inspect the exact symbol's long and short swap values and swap calculation mode. A displayed number may represent points, a monetary amount in a specified currency, a percentage-based rate or a contract-specific rollover method. Multiplying every displayed swap value directly by dollars and lots will not produce a reliable result.

Write down the volume basis, charge currency, rollover time and applicable daily multiplier. If rates are expressed in points, you also need the point's cash value for the actual contract and volume. If the rate is percentage-based, confirm the price basis and day-count convention used by the broker. Keep the dated specification with your trade notes.

Work through a cash-per-lot example

Assume a fictional long-swap charge of $6 per lot per single rollover, a USD account and a 0.20-lot position. One single-charge rollover costs $6 × 0.20 = $1.20. If this hypothetical week applies multipliers of 1, 1 and 3 across the dates held, there are five charge units, so the total is $1.20 × 5 = $6.

If the price-distance profit at closing is $12 and separate commission is $2, the net result is $12 minus $6 minus $2 = $4. Actual fills already incorporate the executed opening and closing prices; avoid subtracting an additional spread that is already reflected there.

Rollover multiplierVolumeCharge at $6 per lot
10.20 lot$1.20
10.20 lot$1.20
30.20 lot$3.60
Total: 5 charge units$6.00

Triple rollover is a schedule, not a universal weekday

A multi-day charge can account for settlement or non-trading days. Do not assume that every symbol always applies it on Wednesday or that the displayed weekly pattern is unaffected by holidays. MT5's symbol properties include rollover-day and daily-multiplier information, and the broker's schedule determines the actual charge.

A plan to exit just before rollover also depends on getting filled. Spreads, liquidity, session breaks or execution problems may prevent the expected close. Compare expected and posted charges in account history after the rollover; a pre-trade estimate is not a substitute for the recorded result.

Directions and changing volumes matter

Long and short rates can differ and both can be negative. A positive figure for one direction is not free income: an adverse price move, wider spread or changing financing rate can outweigh it. A hedge with opposite positions can also carry charges on both sides even when its net directional exposure appears small.

For a basket, use the volume actually held at each rollover. A grid that grows from 0.10 to 0.30 to 0.60 lots does not incur the first trade's financing throughout. At an assumed $6-per-lot single rate, those three single rollovers would cost $0.60, $1.80 and $3.60, totaling $6. A constant 0.10-lot estimate would materially understate that exercise.

Compare account terms rather than advertising labels

An account advertised as swap-free may apply holding fees, administration charges, instrument exclusions or time limits. Read the applicable written terms and ask how a particular symbol is charged after each holding period. Do not assume that a label guarantees zero ongoing cost for an indefinitely held position.

For an EA test, record the financing assumptions and the intended broker account. A report that excludes costs can be useful for studying entries but should not be presented as expected net performance. Long holding times and increasing basket volume deserve explicit sensitivity cases with less favorable rates.

A practical financing review

  • Record the exact symbol, account type, trade direction, rate unit, volume basis and currency.
  • List the rollover dates the plan may cross, including daily multipliers and relevant broker holidays.
  • Calculate separately for each volume held and convert currency only under stated assumptions.
  • Compare financing, commission and executed price-distance profit without double-counting spread.
  • Reconcile the estimate with statement entries and investigate unexplained differences using dated broker specifications.
  • Stress-test a longer holding period and larger basket; neither a target nor a favorable backtest determines how quickly a future trade will close.

Common questions

  • Is swap always a charge? Some directions or contracts can credit financing, but the current specification and actual statement determine the result.
  • Do weekend charges imply that the market was trading then? A rollover multiplier can account for settlement days even when trading is closed.
  • Does a swap-adjusted EA target remove risk? No. Adjusting a target does not ensure that price will reach it, that rates remain fixed or that the account can hold the position until then.
